One Bear | One Book Alumni Wide Book Club Discusses the Dreamt Land by Mark Arax

  • Potrero Hill San Francisco, CA (map)

Join us for our first alumni wide book discussion in the One Bear | One Book program: The Dreamt Land: Chasing Water & Dust Across California by Mark Arax.

Writer Zac Unger '96, president of Oakland Firefighters IAFF will be moderating the event.

We are hosting an in person Carberry Dinner with appetizers to discuss the book with fellow alums at a San Francisco home. There is also the option to participate via Zoom.

The series is set up with the hope that readers will enjoy reading the entire roster and discussing the books at the established dates.

The One Bear | One Book program seeks to connect alums in a global book club where all are encouraged to read and discuss a selected title at the same time. The first season of books has been nominated by The Brown Club of Greater San Francisco, the Brown Club of Georgia, the Brown Club of Washington DC, the Brown Club of Miami, and the Center for Slavery and Justice at Brown. Each Club nominated a book that captures the zeitgeist of their region, a title they would tell a fellow alum: “you gotta read this.”

Said Brown Club of Greater San Francisco Co-President Lisa Ryers '90 of The Dreamt Land:

"With eight states in the West now fighting for pay outs from the Colorado River, no other book examines in human language how the demands of California agriculture affect the playbook, how it has for centuries. More than taking a virtuous three minute shower...more than bad mouthing that golf course, Arax shows you what's really at stake. As California has historically fed the nation, we recognize this as a national book."
